What is Zofran?

Zofran is a prescription drug that works by blocking chemicals in the body that trigger nausea and vomiting. It is often prescribed to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Zofran has also been prescribed to many pregnant women for nausea, however, Zofran has not been approved for this use and may cause birth defects.

Adverse Side Effects

Recent studies have indicated that there is a higher rate of birth defects in babies where the mother ingested Zofran during the first trimester. The defects that are most prevalent are cleft lip, cleft pallet and heart defects, including atrial septal defect or a hole in the heart wall.

Legal Options

Currently lawsuits are being filed against the manufacturer of Zofran claiming the manufacturer failed to warn expecting mothers of the dangers of Zofran as well as for promoting Zofran for a non-approved use. If your child suffered one of these birth defects and you ingested Zofran during the first trimester, you may be entitled to compensation from the manufacturer for a failure to warn of the harm suffered by your baby.
